Masteron is the most popular brand (trade) name for the active substance Drostanolone. Although others are available, Masteron remains by far the most popular one. Drostanolone is an injectable (there’s no oral version) anabolic and androgenic steroid (AAS) that is derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
In fact, this is a very unique steroid because of the way it was derived from DHT. The steroid is altered by the addition of a methyl group at the carbon 2 position. This is the change that makes Masteron work the way it does, which is different from most other steroids.
Because of this change, Masteron is a steroid that you either love or hate. That’s because Masteron is not highly anabolic and it’s not very helpful at growing immense muscle mass. So, many people don’t want to use it. Nonetheless, those who actually use it (correctly) would really love this steroid.
- For this reason, Masteron is highly popular in bodybuilding. More specifically, this is a steroid that it’s very popular for cutting, hardening, and pre-contest purposes. Some even use it as an aromatase inhibitor (AI). This is why Drostanolone is actually an awesome steroid as a finisher during the cycle.
Nonetheless, it’s very important to remember that in order to experience the most benefits out of using it, you’ve always got to stack it with other steroids. People use it with cutting steroids for the best results out of a cutting cycle. Or with aromatizing steroids like Dianabol because Masteron would work in synergy to counteract the estrogenic issues and offer some hardening effects.
Masteron Profile
The first version of Masteron (drostanolone) that was available was Propionate. It was created for the purpose of treating breast cancer in women. But later it started to be used among bodybuilders as a cutting steroid and the Masteron Enanthate version appeared. Nowadays, there are only 2 versions of Drostanolone (Masteron): Propionate with half life of 1-3 days and Enanthate with half life of 7-9 days.
There’s no difference between these two versions except for half life. Therefore they have different release times and require different administration schedules. Pretty much the same as with Testosterone.
The steroid has an anabolic to androgenic rating of only 62:25. In comparison, testosterone anabolic to androgenic rating is 100:100. While this does mean that Masteron is milder and it’s not as effective at growing muscles, do not assume that Masteron is actually weak and ineffective. You shouldn’t also use it alone, but when stacking it with other steroids and using it correctly, there is barely anything better than Masteron for hardening and cutting purposes.
As said, Drostanolone is a DHT steroid. DHT is an androgen hormone. This is the hormone that gives males secondary male characteristics (man features). It’s also a hormone that doesn’t convert into estrogen. With Masteron, you are going to receive more DHT levels but won’t increase estrogen. In fact, as I said, some bodybuilders were using it as Anti Estrogen. That’s because Masteron has aromatase inhibiting properties.
Masteron and Other Steroids
The reasons why it’s always best to stack Masteron with other steroids is because Masteron is a mild steroid by itself, you won’t benefit from the fact that it works as an aromatase inhibitor (anti estrogen) and it’s also a steroid that binds to SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin). By binding to SHBG, it makes other steroids work even better. So you have three different reasons to stack Drostanolone with other steroids rather than use it alone.
SHBG is a protein that is binding to sex steroids and makes them inactive for as long as this protein is bound to them. Considering that Masteron binds to SHBG, other steroids are getting enhanced effects.
Generally, it’s important to understand that there’s a difference between “free” testosterone and “bound” testosterone. Free testosterone is what really matters. Therefore, the higher you get the free testosterone relative to the total testosterone you have, the more benefits you’re receiving from a cycle.
Considering that Masteron is a DHT derivative, it strongly binds to SHBG. That’s what increases free testosterone and what makes other steroids (that you use concomitantly with Masteron) more effective. So, rather than using it alone, it’s always better to stack it.

Masteron Propionate vs Masteron Enanthate
There are two different versions of Masteron coming with two different esters: Propionate and Enanthate.
Generally, there are a lot of injectable anabolic and androgenic steroids that are coming with different esters. Some of the most notable ones are testosterone, nandrolone, and trenbolone. The longer ones such as Enanthate have a slow release, therefore, they kick in the system slower. However, you can get along by using it only twice a week. On the other hand, we have shorter esters such as Propionate that have a fast release, therefore, they kick in the system fast. The problem is that you should use them way more frequently – such as every day (ED) or at least every other day (EOD).
They both come with advantages and disadvantages but if you hate needles, longer versions are a much better option such as Enanthate. But Propionate ester is reaching peak levels in the body much faster than Enanthate. It’s also going to be out of the system faster. It causes faster results and recovery will be faster too (because your body starts recovering when all steroids are out of the system).
In the end, you have to decide what kind of injection schedule you’re ready to go for. But I would recommend going for Masteron Propionate if you plan a cycle length of 8 weeks or even less. If you plan longer cycles – it’s a good idea to run Masteron Enanthate. But it’s also up to each one’s preferences.
Stacks
Also depending on the ester you add, people tend to stack it with other steroids with similar esters.
For example, if they go for the shorter ester Masteron Propionate, then they generally stack it with steroids with similar esters such as Testosterone Propionate, Trenbolone Acetate, or Nandrolone Phenylpropionate (NPP). However, if they are choosing the longer version: Masteron Enanthate, then they generally tend to stack it with longer injectable steroid versions too such as Testosterone Enanthate or Cypionate; Trenbolone Enanthate or Hexahydrobenzylcarbonate or Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone Decanoate).
In terms of oral steroids – add whichever you need.
Dosage
Once again, remember that it’s best to use Masteron as a part of a steroid stack rather than using it alone. I’ve earlier explained three different reasons for doing that.
The average Masteron dosage is 400-600 mg/week, but some users with more experience sometimes go to dosages as high as 1,000 mg/week. Do not assume that this is a mild steroid so it won’t cause side effects. At 1,000 mg per week, it’s actually likely to cause some.
If you use it, however, remember that it has a detection time of about 3 weeks for the Propionate and 3 months for the Enanthate version. If you’re about to have an anti-doping test, Masteron would test positive so stay clear of it (and any other steroid).
As explained earlier – how often you should use it or the cycle length depends on the version of Drostanolone you choose.
Best Results
It’s important to understand that Masteron is not a bulking steroid. If you use it for the purpose of growing muscles you’re likely to be disappointed. However, Masteron is perfect for cutting and hardening cycles. It’s also a compound that is working best for those people who are having lower body fat and are searching to harden up their muscles. That’s why this is a compound that works great as a finisher to a cutting cycle prior to a competition or a photo shoot.
- A lot of people consider Masteron (Drostanolone) mostly a cosmetic steroid. That’s because the user should already have a nice looking physique and by adding Masteron, it’s going to look even better, drier, and harder. But a person who is high in body fat and wants to grow muscles and/or uses it alone is simply wasting their time.
So, I don’t recommend using Masteron alone or using it for the purpose of growing muscle mass. I wouldn’t recommend people with body fat over 10-13% to use it either. But people who are already having a decent amount of muscle mass, are not having lots of fat, and want to get the ultimate physique, can add Masteron (Drostanolone) to their already existing steroid cycle. That’s surely going to help them reach their goal. They are going to benefit from increased free testosterone, water reduction, low side effects profile, fat burn, and muscle hardening properties.
Masteron Side Effects
There are no anabolic steroids in existence that wouldn’t cause androgenic side effects and natural testosterone suppression among men or virilization issues among women. Of course, it depends on the dosage, cycle length, and steroid type, but all of them cause these issues. Exactly as all of them cause negative effects on cholesterol and cardiovascular health.
So, Masteron is not an exception. You’re likely to experience these side effects. People who are genetically predisposed to them, those with pre existing health issues, and those who abuse this steroid are at the highest risk.
The good news is that Masteron (Drostanolone) is not going to cause any hepatotoxic issues and it’s not causing any estrogenic issues either. Being DHT – it cannot aromatize. In fact, as I said, it can work as an anti-estrogen.
