If we were to use a scale to determine the severity of side effects that Oxandrolone can cause, the number is going to be near the bottom. That’s because Oxandrolone side effects are far not as severe as they can be with other anabolic steroids. This is among the most side effect friendly anabolic and androgenic steroids, however, it definitely doesn’t mean that this steroid does not have any risks of negative side effects. Using it carefully is what makes it safer in the first place, but if you attempt an abuse, the Oxandrolone side effects can be really bad.
Here I am going to talk about the side effects of this steroid but remember: in order to avoid them, please learn how to use it correctly first. Moreover, remember that Oxandrolone is actually the chemical name (active substance name) of the steroid that is popular by its brand – Anavar. You could find Oxandrolone as numerous other brand names except for Anavar though.
Anyway, the most important is that Anavar (Oxandrolone) has been branded by both researchers and users as “effective and safe”. Moreover, this is one of the very few steroids that is still approved by the FDA. While it doesn’t mean that it’s all safe, it does indicate that it is effective and relatively safe when used correctly. That’s proven in medical settings too because using Anavar (Oxandrolone) in low to moderate doses won’t be causing dangerous side effects in healthy individuals.
- Nonetheless, in case you would abuse Anavar (Oxandrolone) where you use it in high dosages and/or for a prolonged time, the risk of side effects definitely increases. It’s also a steroid that I wouldn’t recommend in case you have some specific pre-existing health issues either.
The Good News About Oxandrolone Side Effects
You should be aware of the fact that Oxandrolone is not an estrogenic steroid. This means that it is not going to aromatize into estrogen so it won’t increase estrogen levels. Without increasing the estrogenic levels (nor attaching to estrogenic receptors directly) – you wouldn’t need to use any aromatase inhibitors (AI) with Anavar. This steroid wouldn’t be causing any estrogenic issues. Some popular estrogenic issues include gynecomastia, feeling emotional, and water retention as well as others.
However, I need to warn you that considering that most men will use other steroids (such as testosterone) stacked with Oxandrolone (Anavar), the use of aromatase inhibitors might still be required. That’s because the other steroids might be converting into estrogen causing issues.
Another good news about Oxandrolone is that despite being an oral steroid, it’s far not as liver toxic as other orally active steroids. In fact, as earlier said, it’s one of the most side effect friendly steroids on the market. But as said, some side effects can still occur while using it. Check some of them below.
Natural Testosterone Suppression
It is true that Anavar is by far one of the mildest steroids on the market. This means that it is far from the most suppressive steroid. Nonetheless, it’s still a powerful steroid that you need to respect because it will still reduce your natural testosterone production a lot. In fact, it can lower them enough and you are going to experience side effects related to low testosterone such as low libido, fatigue, low strength, mood changes, and others. Especially if you already have low testosterone levels before using Anavar.
- This is the reason why I strongly recommend men add an exogenous source of testosterone (testosterone of whatever ester) to all their Anavar cycles. This way, you can maintain high testosterone levels during the cycle which helps you achieve your goals easier and faster. This is also the reason why I strongly recommend men have Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) after each cycle of anabolic steroids.
Women, however, shouldn’t use other steroids during the use of Anavar to reduce the chances of virilization side effects.
Virilization in Women
Oxandrolone side effects in women include virilization (masculinization) issues pretty much as any other anabolic and androgenic steroid in existence. Nonetheless, Anavar for women is the most female friendly steroid in existence. Considering that virilization side effects are the biggest risk among women using steroids, it’s no wonder Anavar is the most popular steroid for women.
- Mainly it’s because it’s more than possible for women to avoid experiencing any virilization side effects while using Anavar responsibly. Usually, it includes doses of lower than 20 mg a day and cycles shorter than 6 weeks. Women using 10 mg per day for a maximum of 6 weeks is what I would recommend to women using Oxandrolone to make sure they can avoid these issues.
Masculinization issues cannot be controlled other than just reducing the dosage. These issues have a strong relationship with your genetics as some women are more prone to such issues than others. But reducing dosage and keeping cycles short is the best way to avoid these issues.
Among virilization issues, I can mention the deepening of the voice, body, and/or facial hair growth, clitoral enlargement, menstrual irregularities, and others. In the end, such reactions are almost certain to occur with other steroids. However, they are way less likely to occur when women use Anavar in proper dosage and cycle length. In fact, many women use it without any masculinization issues at all.
Liver Toxicity
Injectable steroids are not liver toxic because they do not pass through your liver before entering your bloodstream. But oral steroids do. That’s why they are liver toxic. So all oral steroids carry some toxicity to your liver. However, the good news is that Anavar is definitely on the lower end of the scale when talking about hepatotoxicity.
At the same time, if you attempt using Anavar (Oxandrolone) in too large doses and/or for too long periods of time – your liver can still suffer quite a lot. Your liver enzymes are still going to increase while using the Anavar cycle. Increases in liver enzymes indicate liver stress. For this exact reason, despite the fact that it is safer than other orals, you still shouldn’t use it for longer than 8 weeks.
- Moreover, avoid other liver toxic compounds. Such as oral steroids, alcohol, some medications, and others to avoid too much stress on your liver. Also, do add some liver protection supplements. Such as Milk Thistle, NAC, TUDCA, LIV 52, or others to help protect your liver.
Androgenic Issues
Androgenic issues among men can occur pretty much as with any other steroid. But since it’s a milder steroid than many others, the androgenic side effects are also less likely to occur. Especially considering that Anavar has a much lower androgenic rating than testosterone, for example. Therefore, Anavar can cause hair loss and acne, for example. Nonetheless, it won’t cause you to start going bald if you do not have the genetics. Nonetheless, if you do have the predisposition to baldness then you would lose hair with or without Oxandrolone. It’s just the fact that this steroid (pretty much like any other) can speed it up. Oxandrolone, however, will mildly speed it up considering it’s a safer steroid.
Pretty much the same thing applies to any other virilization issues such as acne or aggressiveness. If you do have the genetics of developing acne, Anavar may speed it up. If you’re an impulsive person, Anavar may make it worse. But if you’re not having acne genetics and you’re a calm person, Oxandrolone will not turn you into an aggressive acne sufferer for sure.

In the end, it’s very important to understand that these are not all the possible side effects of Oxandrolone. This is an anabolic steroid and pretty much like any other, is capable of causing side effects.
All steroids can cause issues. But Anavar side effects are actually much milder and are very well tolerated by both men and women. You could also control them through various methods but most importantly – by correctly using Anavar.
